“4 Star, The greatest Hollywood musical ever made!” ~Roger Elbert

Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds star in this ,arguably, the best musical ever made. It’s about when Hollywood went from silent movies to the ‘talkies’ and how hard it was because most of the actors and actress had pretty bad voices! I love the musical numbers! Arthur Freed was the songwriter, and the music was by Nacio Herb Brown. The movie was directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen. I didn’t care for the pairing of Kelly and Reynolds. I LOVE the songs, “Moses Supposes”, “Singing in the Rain”, “You Are My Lucky Star” (which was taken out, but is now on the dvd), and “Make Them Laugh” (which was ‘borrowed’ from Cole Poters “Be A Clown”. This movie also has Jean Hage, Millard Mitchell, adn Cyd Charisse. I give this a movie a B-.Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I really don’t agree that this is the “greatest musical every filmed.” That’s an overstatement. There are no great singers in this movie. I grant you, the dancing is beautifully done, thanks to Gene Kelly, Donald O’Conner and Debbie Reynolds.

Other musicals that I enjoyed more were “Calamity Jane,” which was one of Doris Day’s finest hours; “A Star Is Born,” Judy Garland’s masterpiece; “Love Me or Leave Me,” another Doris Day gem; “West Side Story,” “Gypsy” (it should have had Ethel Merman, however), “The Pajama Game,” wow, another Day classic,
“The Gay Divorcee” w/ Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers, plus a few more.

I think “Singin’ In The rain” would go close as the best musical, because it is more an ensemble piece that a star studded vehicle. One of the most important elements in the film to really make it great and give it bite, is the fantastic performance of Jean Hagen as lena Lamont. And of course the tile song…..what can I say!!
